How to Check Car Oil

Checking oil level on dipstick

When you think about it, motor oil is the lifeblood of your Mitsubishi vehicle, so you should always make sure there’s just the right amount to protect all the engine’s internal moving parts. Before you continue to tackle the Scottsdale roads ahead of you, find out how to check car oil with the service team at Bell Road Mitsubishi today!

Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Before we get started, check if your model has a traditional dipstick as some newer vehicles have electronic oil monitors that don’t use traditional dipsticks. You can also consult your owner’s manual to find out. If your vehicle does have a traditional dipstick, you can check the oil manually and here’s how you’ll go about it in your Peoria garage:

  1. Make sure the vehicle is parked on level ground and that the engine is turned off and cold.
  2. Open the vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil from the end of it.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, then pull it out and look at both sides to see where the level is.

Dipsticks should have some way of indicating the proper oil level. If the top of your oil streak is between two marks or within a cross-hatched area, then the level is good. If it isn’t, you’ll need to add more oil. In the event that you do need more oil, make sure to buy the grade recommended in the owner’s manual. Once you have the oil, remove the oil filler cap and add the oil a little at a time until the dipstick indicates you’ve reached the proper level.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

Your car needs the right oil level to perform the way that it’s designed to on the Glendale roads. Generally, oil changes are recommended at least twice yearly, depending on the model and how it’s driven. However, you can do oil checks yourself at least once a month. When you do these checks, you’re ensuring there are no leaks and that there is enough oil for your car. However, if you notice your car’s hood is hot to the touch or there’s steam billowing out from under the hood, schedule a service appointment without delay. Your car could have an oil leak and the engine is overheating.
